In the summer, D.C. Everest offers two unique summer programs for 4K-12 students: Time to Shine and the Hmong Phoojywg (Friendship) Enrichment Program. Both programs provide students with the opportunity to advance their academic skills while making new friends and exploring their interests.
The Time to Shine program offers a wide variety of courses, all of which play an important role in helping students avoid the “summer slide” by challenging them to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a new summer learning experience. Courses range from academic skills development in core courses to fitness, art, drama, wellness and photography. The DCE summer program is popular with students and families, in particular because the content is themed around current student interests. For example, students can explore the sciences in Crafty Kitchen Chemistry, Space and Solar System, Lego Physics, Rubik’s Cube, Science in Action, and Star Wars Universe. They can enjoy the outdoors with Gardening 101, Summer Fitness, Photography, and Environmental Camp. Fitness courses explore an array of individual and team competition, while art and reading courses survey a range of artists and writers. In Broadway Bound, aspiring performers end their course with a musical showcase and in Old School students explore games and crafts from earlier eras.
This year, the District is also offering a few new courses including AI Adventures and the Summer Shadow Series. The Summer Shadow Series offers students in grades 9 - 12 with the opportunity to explore four high-demand career paths — construction, healthcare, manufacturing and transportation — via in-depth job shadow experiences. Students can choose to attend all four weeks, or just one week — based on their career interests.
In addition, the summer program will continue its engineering-focused series (which is very popular with DCE students) by partnering with Engineering Tomorrow. This summer students in grades 5 - 9 can enroll in a Packaging Engineering course from June 24 - 26. Students will participate in hands-on learning experiences that help them explore package design and development with an emphasis on cost-effective sustainability. The course will culminate in a competition to design and test their own sustainable package capable of protecting a single potato chip.
Enrollment for Time to Shine begins March 17 and ends April 17.
The Hmong Phoojywg (Friendship) Enrichment Program is a two-week session that provides all students in grade K-12 from the DCE and Wausau School Districts with the opportunity to explore the Hmong culture. Students learn about Hmong dress, games, history, art and language through a variety of hands-on activities and local field trips. The program ends with student performances on the final day.
Enrollment for Hmong Phoojywg (Friendship) Enrichment Program opens the week of March 10.

D.C. Everest students have made it clear — through student panels, surveys and leadership groups — that opportunities to explore careers and venture into “real world” work-based experiences before deciding on a post-secondary path are crucial.
D.C. Everest students have made it clear — through student panels, surveys and leadership groups — that opportunities to explore careers and venture into “real world” work-based experiences before deciding on a post-secondary path are crucial. Therefore, during the past two years, the District has expanded its community outreach, hosting events that bring together community members, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations and business leaders. The District hosted a two-part series for the business and non-profit community, as well as a session for the general public, that showcased what education looks like today and how it is structured to meet the needs of the 21st century workforce, public school resources and community partnership opportunities. During the sessions, attendees discussed new ways to partner with the District to enhance student learning opportunities and heard from DCE Senior High students who attended the sessions and participated in roundtable discussions.
As a result of these outreach efforts, the District has launched two new initiatives. The first is Building Bridges, a student-family career fair that will be held on Thursday, March 6 at the DCE Senior High. At this event, DCE Senior High students and their families will have the opportunity to hear directly from a diverse range of local professionals who will share their career and education experiences, provide networking advice and speak about the benefits of living in this area. The District is hosting this event in partnership with the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board. Peter Gelhar, NCWWDB Business & Community Engagement Coordinator, attended the District’s Connect & Collaborate event and, based on conversations with DCE students and attendees, immediately began working with Manee Yang-Vongphakdy, DCE Career Experiences Coordinator, and Aaron Hoffman, DCE Career and Technical Education Coordinator on Building Bridges.
In addition, the District is launching a new Summer Shadow Series as part of its summer programming. This course for students in grades 9 - 12 will provide them with the opportunity to explore four high-demand career paths — construction, healthcare, manufacturing and transportation — via in-depth job shadow experiences. Students can choose to attend all four weeks, or just one week — based on their career interests. This series is a direct result of the Connect & Collaborate session hosted by the District.

Each year, members of the D.C. Everest Mock Trial team have the opportunity to work on a fictional case with the assistance of their coaches. This year’s fictional case was a criminal case revolving around a virtual reality game tournament held at a convention center. The night before the championship round, one of the top competitors is found deceased in their hotel room. Their rival in the game is soon arrested and charged with potential homicide. Mock Trial participants must work both sides of the case within a courtroom setting.
D.C. Everest’s Mock Trial team was composed of the Gold team, which represented the prosecution side, the Green team representing the defense side and — for the first time — sketch artists. The coaches included DCE teachers Ciera Levake and Rebecca Searing, as well as Attorney Victoria Karcher. The Gold team was composed primarily of new Mock Trial team members who had their first experience in the courtroom this year. They included: Arianna Andersen, Jonathan Gates, Hailey Geer, Christina Her, Aayla Huffman, Dashton Isham, Alex Jelen, Siyean Seong, Tatiana Tovar and Will Waggoner. The Green team was primarily composed of returning Mock Trial members who have had previous courtroom experience. The team included: Sam Andersen, Ava Bendickson, Qiarie Burns, Jack Dupuis, Kaden Goff, Izzy Lezcano, Elin Nielsen, Ola Onitilo, Ava Schueller, Peter Schwantes and Taylor Thelen. The DCE Mock Trial courtroom artists were Beyla Fritz and Brea Thao.
After 10 hours of trials at the Marathon County Courthouse, the D.C. Everest Green Mock Trial team earned second place and an opportunity to compete at the State Competition that will be held in Madison this March.
