Everest Students Toured Europe as Wisconsin Musical Goodwill Ambassadors
Six D.C Senior High students joined over 250 selected musicians from around the state to represent Wisconsin as part of the Wisconsin Ambassador’s of Music (WAM) 2018 Summer European Tour. From June 27 through July 12, the students toured and performed in remarkable venues in various cities in England, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy and Germany.
The Everest students who performed with the WAM Band were Peyton Greene a percussionist; Keely Finnegan and Makayla Anderson both trombone players, and Haley Kuehn who plays clarinet. Members of the choir were Erica Rupple, a soprano and Matthew Schaffer, a baritone. The students found the music fun to perform and were amazed at how involved the audience would cheer them on and clap along.
“The WAM tour was an amazing trip”, said Payton Green. “I really enjoyed how we got to sightsee around so many unique cities and towns and experience a variety of cultures. My favorite country was Switzerland because of the gorgeous mountains, the fantastic food and the welcoming people. Our concert in Crans-Montana Switzerland was very memorable. I remember having the biggest smile on my face after our percussion buckets piece because of how the audience cheered for us. The trip is something I will remember forever.”
“My favorite concert was our first performance held at the Pfarrrikirch in Seefed, Austria”, said Erica Rupple. “A student signed along to ‘Precious Lord Take My Hand’ and it brought me to tears. I enjoyed touring the many wonderful countries and feel I have a better understanding and appreciation of the different cultures.”
The WAM band was conducted by Alex Sabo from Racine and the WAM Choir was directed by Amy Thiel from Oconto Falls. Additional music directors from around the state were enlisted to help staff the tour and work with the students, including Everest Band Director Joe Finnegan. “It was exciting to visit and explore all the new countries and challenging to maintain the tight schedule to tour and perform”, said Joe Finnegan. “Although each country had their own language, music is an international language enjoyed by all. This opportunity provided an unforgettable musical adventure for these outstanding musicians.”
