Backup Tape Not Changed or Not Ejecting
If a tape change is missed (due to vacation day,
snow day, etc.) steps must be taken on the next school day to ensure backups
will continue as scheduled.
If you do not follow the steps below on the first
day back, there will be no backup that night. Also, the backup tape
will not eject the next morning. This will give you a visual reminder
that something needs to be done.
The problem that occurs is that the tape is not
changed on the day that is missed. When the backup runs that night,
it does not find a tape in the drive and stops to ask for one. Until
a tape is inserted and the backup software is told to continue, it just
sits and keeps asking for help.
To clear the alert in Backup Exec software:
-
Turn on the monitor on the file server if it's off.
-
Press Ctrl+ESC (This will display a list of
running software.)

-
Type the number listed next to "Backup Exec - Job
Manager" and press Enter
-
You should see a blue screen with two "windows" on
it.
-
If the "Session Status" window says "Ready" then
there is nothing more to do. (If this is the case, and the tape is still not ejecting daily,
please contact me or Sia
Thao.)

-
The "Messages" window should have several notices
that "Session 1" needs attention. If not, call the Technology Department
for help.

-
Press ENTER
-
Next the following message should appear:

-
Press N. (If you press Y, the backup
will attempt to begin immediately. Pressing N aborts the backup that was stalled.
The backup will still run normally tonight.)
-
A window called "Job Completion Status" will appear.
Press ESC once to clear it.

-
Check that the "Session Status" window near the top
of the screen says "Ready"
-
If it does not say "Ready" call me or Deb.
-
If you haven't already changed the backup tape since
the missed day, do so now and make sure it's inserted correctly.
Do not continue until the tape drive has stopped "whirring."
-
Turn off the monitor.
