The nearest "large" city is Wausau. The school district spans much of Marathon from the City of Schofield, Villages of Hatley, Weston, and Rothschild, Townships of Easton, Ringle, and Weston, part of the City of Wausau, and Townships of Norrie, Reid, and Kronenwetter. This area covers 162 square miles, with a population in excess of 30,000 citizens.

Local attractions in Wausau are Rib Mountain, Eau Claire Dells, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Marathon Park, international kayaking competitions, Grand Theater, Badger State Winter Games, and Nine-Mile County Park.
