Riverside Library Read-a-thon Students read over 2800 books and raised over $3,600 for our
library! By: Mrs.
Dembowski, IMC Coordinator This
year students were asked to volunteer to participate in a school-wide
“Read-a-thon” that lasted two weeks. The
“Read-a-thon” is a program that we hoped would bring students together with
family and friends to encourage reading and to build literacy skills, while at
the same time, raise additional funds for the school library.
The “Read-a-thon” involved students 1) getting money pledges from family and
friends, 2) reading and recording the number of books read and 3) after the two
weeks were up, collecting pledges by the due date.
Participants could read on their own, or with family and friends. Students in grades K-2 had the option to either read books
themselves or have someone read to them. Students
in grades 3-5 could count every 25 pages as “one book” due to the fact that
they read more difficult chapter books.
A
record sheet was used to keep track of the number of books read.
When completed, the signed sheet and collected pledge money was returned
to the library.
What were
the prizes that students earned for their efforts? *4th place winners – Those who read up to 10 books and collected up to $15 received a bookmark and a lollipop. *3rd place winners – Those who read at least 15 books and collected a minimum of $25 received an engraved bronze medal, a $2.00 Barnes and Noble Bookstore gift certificate and a lollipop. *2nd place winners – Those who read at least 20 books and collected a minimum of $35 received an engraved silver medal, a $5.00 Barnes and Noble Bookstore gift certificate and a lollipop. *1st place winners – Those who read at least 25 books and collected at least $50 received an engraved gold medal, a $10.00 Barnes and Noble Bookstore gift certificate and a lollipop. *GRAND
PRIZES – The students that raised the largest amount of money in the K-2 level
and the 3rd- 5th grade level each received: $25
gift certificate to Barnes and Noble and a trophy. The students who read
the most books in each category also receive a trophy.. I would like to extend a special thank you to all of
our participating families. Your
generosity and hard work are very much appreciated – especially during these
difficult economic times. It was
once said that “libraries are not made, they grow.” And it is through
support such as this that we can continue that mission.
Thank you all very much!
