American History

810 American History

Students in American History will study the birth and growth of our American nation from the colonial period up until the start of the 20th century. Each unit students will study major events and individuals through a concept lens of understanding. Concepts like independence, diversity, migration, perspective and conflict will be examined in units on The American Revolution, Birth of the Republic, Westward Expansion and the Civil War. 

* Students will also be engaged in extensive research on a History Day topic.

American Institutions

1 Credit  910 American Institutions

American Institutions will study the organization and functions of our government and economic system. The purpose of this course is to give students an understanding of the democratic ideals upon which our government and economy are based. The course objectives and activities are intended to help students to understand the basic political and economic problems faced by our nation; and to prepare the students to make political and economics choices as a responsible citizens.

Social Studies AAP

The gifted and talented program at D.C. Everest Junior high School (EDGE) provides above average students with the opportunity of being challenged in the subject of social studies. One section at each grade level 8 and 9 has been identified as part of the EDGE program . Criteria for student selection have been established. Students qualifying for these classes will find them to be more challenging because content will be covered in more depth, and they will be provided with the opportunity to do enrichment activities. Emphasis will also be placed on critical thinking and the further development of other social studies skills.

Social Studies (Alternative)

1 Credit 913 American Institutions (Alternative)

The Alternative Social Studies class at grade nine is designed for those students who are below grade level in reading and have a difficult time succeeding in the normal classroom. Size of these sections will be restricted to allow for individual attention. The curriculum will remain basically the same as the other sections of grade nine, but the rate of learning the content material will be slower. Emphasis will also be placed on learning basic social studies skills. A criterion for student selection has been established by the social studies department.

AP Human Geography

1 Credit 327 Human Geography
 

The purpose of the AP Human Geography course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the Earth’s surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice.
