D.C. Everest  History Day
 

Objectives

Participation in History Day requires that students master many skills. Many of these skills dovetail with current Standards and Benchmarks defined by the D.C. Everest School District. 

Through participation in History Day, the student will:


Demonstrate understanding of history by
creating a History Day entry on a specific topic and understanding its relationship to other events.

Develop and use critical thinking skills involved in comprehension:

bulletidentifying events in sequence
bulletdiscriminating between facts and opinions
bulletrecognizing cause and effect
bulletdrawing inferences and reaching conclusions
bulletrecognizing attitudes and emotions

Develop and use critical thinking skills involved in decision-making:

bulletdevelop objectivity and open mindedness
bulletdefining problems
bulletconsidering alternatives
bulletdrawing conclusions
bulletclarifying values

Develop and use creative ways to solve problems by:

bulletidentifying the central problem
bulletlocating sources of information and evaluating their reliability
bulletorganizing, analyzing, and interpreting information
bulletusing information to test hypotheses, draw conclusions, and offer solutions

Use library sources effectively by:

bulletorganizing and classifying related facts
bulletusing primary and secondary sources
bulletusing a dictionary, map atlas, almanac, and other reference works
bulletskimming for information
bulletusing a glossary and an index
bulletdeveloping work and study habits

Demonstrate a clear understanding of writing mechanics by:

bulletusing clear, grammatical, and correctly spelled written material
bulletbuilding an annotated bibliography
bulletoutlining a topic's presentation
bulletlearning effective essay/paragraph writing

Develop personal and interpersonal skills by:

bulletdeveloping an efficient method of time management for independent study
bulletlearning to work with others as a team to produce an entry
bulletdeveloping methods of presenting self and information in an effective manner

Place her/his project in an historical context by finding out what happened before and after his/her topic.

Present a balance interpretation by critical use of available resources.

Learn about history by integrating the materials and methods of social studies, art , sciences, literature, language, and music into their presentations and papers.

bulletMotivate students through the excitement of competition and through recognition for their work.

Involve parents and other members of the community in the students' education.

Expose students to new and exciting educational environments by holding contests on college campuses and at historical societies.
